Founded by James DeForest Candler and Charles Wrench, JD Candler Commercial Roofing Company has been one of the country’s oldest operating commercial roofers and has helped to shape the Detroit skyline since 1879.
JD Candler Commercial Roofing has roofed some of Detroit’s most iconic buildings for companies including the Ford Motor Company, Packard Motor Car Company, Fisher Body Corporation, Michigan Central Rail Road, the DAC, the Fisher Building and Masonic Temple. Many of these buildings would become known as the legendary “Arsenal of Democracy,” and birthplace of the world’s early auto, retail and industry pioneers.
Purchased in 1984 by Tom Brown, who has a long family history in the roofing industry, the decades that followed were defined by steady growth across southeast Michigan. Under Brown’s leadership, JD Candler expanded its capabilities and workforce, taking on increasingly complex commercial, industrial, government, and institutional projects from Detroit to Dearborn, Troy, Macomb, and beyond. Through economic cycles, development booms, and a rapidly changing construction landscape, the company held to the same standard it always had — quality workmanship, honest timelines, and crews that knew the trade inside and out.
Today, JD Candler is an independent, Michigan-owned company led by Brad Pronek, David Godek, and Dan Cronk — three men who between them represent well over half a century of hands-on experience in commercial roofing. Pronek, who first joined JD Candler in 2002, oversees business operations and has been central to shaping the company’s direction for more than two decades. Godek brings over 25 years in roofing and construction, with experience spanning virtually every major system and product in the industry. Cronk started as an apprentice more than 40 years ago and has worked his way through every level of the trade. As of January 1, 2026, JD Candler operates as a fully standalone company — no affiliates, no holding companies. Just a Michigan roofing company with 147 years behind it, led by people who came up through the work and intend to keep doing it right.
